Hello again…. today we will talk about the “transition” that is called “Menopause”
Many men and women do not know the inclusive signs of menopause or the emotional journeys that are often present. This can make living together during this period quite volatile, particularly if there financial pressures, children in college, job insecurity,or adolescents at home who are having their own “Hormonal surges”.
“Perimenopause” or “pre” menopause, often begins in the mid fortys and can last through the mid to late fifties. During this time symptoms vary a lot. A few fortunate women just notice a cessation of their menstrual periods and that’s it. Officially you have completed menopause after you have gone for a whole year without a period
Most of us have a constellation of signs that things are changing. First of all, if you never sweat much, you might notice that you are sweating at night or sweat when you drink alcohol or exert yourself. Some women can have debilitating “hot flashes”. This usually indicates a rapid drop in estrogen levels as your ovaries heroicaly try to keep you in balance while they are running out of steam.
Menstrual periods during this time can cover the gamet from irregular, (skipping for months), shortened intervals, scant bleeding, heavy bleeding that borders on hemorhaging, painful periods with clots, or painless ( usually indicate no ovulation) periods.
Additional signs include: frequency or urgency of urination, increased urinary tract infections, heart palpitations, aches and arthritic pains, extreme fatigue with no precipitating cause, loss of hair on the head ,arm pits and pubic area, decreased body odor, memory loss(especially short term,) difficulty focusing, feeling like ants are scampering over your body, tingling and numbness in shoulders and hands.
Loss of libido or interest in sex, increased interest in sex ( secondary to no pregnancy fears usually), poor quality or decreased orgasms, shortening of the vagina can cause difficulties in couple relationships. There is also an increased tendency to get vaginal infections, loss of breast tissue and tissue of the vulva, and dryer less elastic skin.
In addition there are more subtle signs such as feeling like you don’t belong in your body, regret at the loss of the ability to bear children ( even if you had’t the slightest intention of having a child!) feelings of mortality.
In some ways menopause is a blessing because it helps women focus on what they want to do with the rest of their life. Unfortunately Men do not have such an abrupt ”Wake-up” call and frequently try to pretend there is no end to life in many creative and sometimes destructive ways. There is such a thing as “male menopause” but that is a subject for another day.
In a later note I will speak of some of the ways to address the symptoms of menopause including those that are coming “down the pike”
